European Study Groups with Industry

Study Groups with Industry are an internationally recognised method of technology transfer between academic mathematicians and industry. These week-long workshops provide a forum for industrial scientists to work alongside academic mathematicians on problems of direct industrial relevance. They attracts researchers and engineers from a wide range of backgrounds to work on the selected industrial problems.

On the first day the industrial representatives outline their projects and their objectives.

The next three days are devoted to brainstorming, modelling, and solving the problems in a close cooperation with the industrial representatives. Participants are free to apply their expertise to any of the projects.

On the last day the progress and the recommended routes forward are presented. Subsequently, a report containing the results, comments, ideas and suggestions on each problem is written to provide a formal record for both the industrial and the academic participants. The reports of the working groups are assembled in a booklet to form the Study Group Final Report.

The success of the Study Groups' unique format is demonstrated by the extent to which it has been copied around the world and is now extending into other areas, where mathematics may be applied. The European Study Groups with Industry (ESGI) started with the first Study Group in Oxford in 1968 and now there are more about 10 meetings held annually in different European countries.

Information about the problem area and industrial companies at the previous study groups is available here. The website www.maths-in-industry.org provides information about upcoming Study Groups and also contains a repository of the reports on the problems from many of these meetings.

ESGI'120 will be the fourth SGI, held in Bulgaria. The websites of the previous editions are:

The aim of this workshop is to further develop the areas of cooperation between Academia and Industry on reserch, innovation, and education, identified in the previous editions.
